Photos On The Fly

I have a friend who makes beautiful time-lapse videos of New York Harbor. He takes them from his tugboat with his GoPro action camera, and we have all probably seen what a dedicated skier or surfer can do with one of those.

What about the angler who wants to document his or her experience? Continue reading “Photos On The Fly”

Video: How to Tie the Mega Prince Fly

Video: How to Tie the Mega Prince Fly

The Mega Prince is a great fly developed by Dan Delekta. It’s the perfect high water fly and imitates a buggy stonefly nymph. The Mega Prince is best fished as the lead fly on a nymph rig. This fly has a lot of movement to it. The rubber legs and marabou tail allow for the fly to pulse and move in the water. A great western stonefly nymph imitation and a must have when you visit the west!! Continue reading “Video: How to Tie the Mega Prince Fly”

Lighten Up: How Downsizing Your Fly Fishing Gear Can Extend Your Opportunities

Lighten Up: How Downsizing Your Fly Fishing Gear Can Extend Your Opportunities

I stand knee-deep in moderate current, eyeing the grassy bank across and slightly downstream from me. I’ve walked to the end of my street to access a shallow, rocky reach of the river that runs through my backyard.

I strip some line and make a false cast; strip some more and make another. I surprise myself when the size 12 foam spider I tied 30 minutes before lands softly in an eddy. I am delighted when it disappears in a boil of water.

I slow the line with my rod hand and begin retrieving with my stripping hand. My rod bends nearly double as the fish at the end of my line makes a run for a submerged tree branch.

I’m grinning like a kid on Christmas morning by now. I’ll admit, I may even have let out a little “whoop!”

I bring the fish to hand and crouch to admire the brightly-colored 8 inches of fury that I have captured.

It was the beginning. Continue reading “Lighten Up: How Downsizing Your Fly Fishing Gear Can Extend Your Opportunities”

Video: How to Tie the Common Craw Fly

The Common Craw is one buggy little Carp Fly developed by James Spicer. The Common Craw was designed for picky carp on the South Platte River in Denver.  It is a fairly heavy fly, thus is why it works so well in the river. It sinks quickly and stays on the bottom, right where the Carp want it!  It also is made of supple materials, which allows it to move and breath in the water. Do you like to fish trout? No problem, The Common Craw also works on trout too! I initially developed the fly for Carp, but Trout have a hard time resisting it as well! Give it a try! Fly Tying Interview with James Spicer

spicer

It has been a little over a year since we started carrying fly tying materials. During that time, we have learned just how intricate and time-consuming fly tying can be, and how much patience it takes to master. After launching our very first Fly Tying Month this past March, we are even more eager to learn, so we decided to interview a master fly tyer. We sought out our partner, James Spicer from InTheRiffle, to learn more about his fly tying journey. Enjoy the Q&A!

Korkers Devil's Canyon detailed product review
Korkers Devil’s Canyon

Review:
“I have had a few pairs of boots and borrowed others through the years. These are by far the most comfortable I have ever worn!!! They offer maximum comfort around the ankle where wader material usually bunches up and digs in or cuts off circulation and they are super easy to get on and off. They are made easy to get on and off because of the BOA system, but the neoprene section around the ankle makes it even easier. I can get them on or off in less than 2 minutes!
