It was early spring, class just let out, and I had plans to visit my girlfriend for the weekend in Western North Carolina. I packed a few fly boxes and slid my Redington Classic Trout 9 foot 4 weight fly rod into my rod tube, hoping to get a shot at some Southeastern trout. After a long night, foggy headed, and weather conditions alike, I pull up to one of Western North Carolina’s best kept secret fly fishing spot. Working my way up stream, high sticking a frenchie, I come to a deep run accompanied by a few boulders. As my fly naturally drifts past the second boulder, my fly line begins to tighten and the click and paw drag on my Redington Zero starts to sing. As the trout races upstream, the Redington Classic Trout does a superb job controlling the fish and protecting my 6x tippet. A few acrobatic moves later I land the fish and the weekend trip to visit my girlfriend was all worth it! The Sparkle Dun
The Sparkle Dun dry fly is basically a Comparadun with a polypropelene tail to imitate a trailing shuck of an emerging mayfly. It can be tied in a variety of colors to mimic many different mayflies. From larger Green Drakes and March Browns down to the classic BWO’s and PMD’s. The Sparkle Dun is a great fly to imitate an emerging or a crippled mayfly. The deer hair tied up will help this sit right in the film as an emerging bug would. The emerger yarn resembles a shuck as this bug gets ready to spread its wings. Pair this bad boy with some Shimazaki dry shake and the fish will eat it like it’s going out of style.
The Lil’ Kim
The Lil’ Kim has an excellent set of fish catching aspects. It is a mid-weight streamer that features a great blend of natural and synthetic materials. This fly is one of confidence pattern when chucking meat. The Marabou creates super lifelike movement while the palmer chenille underneath helps to keep the profile strong when wet. Ad the flash for some attraction and bam, tight line! The Lil’ Kim was also our top producing fly in our streamer fishing for trout video. Give it a look!
Little did I know that fly fishing would be my rock when my fiancé broke up with me for the last time in December. He had told me on multiple occasions that I needed to go out and do more things by myself as I was too dependent on him for my happiness (not sure that was entirely accurate). This may have been the reason that I jumped 100% into fly fishing as Nati, the Goldendoodle and I could do it by ourselves. Leaving him to sit on the couch being introverted.
It took that moment in December to realize just how lucky I had been to stumble into an amazing community. Continue reading “The Fly Fishing Obsession: Part 2”
The Carp-It Bomb
The Carp-It Bomb is Matt Bennett’s pattern and an extremely effective carp fly. It is a buggy pattern that can represent multitudes of different aquatic species. It is a great fly for still water fishing because it will ride hook-up and slide along the bottom of any body of water. You can fish this fly with confidence knowing it will turn some heads and get eaten!
