Let me begin this post with an apology: I promised our readership regular content in my first blog post, and have certainly not delivered! I may have an adventurous spirit, but I act hesitantly and constantly find excuses for myself that hold me back more often than not.
I should also add, here at the beginning, that this story spans over July-October, and thus, takes longer to tell than should or would have. Such is the consequence of my inaction!
The Nitro Caddis Pupa is a great little fly developed by Andrij Horodysky. It imitates a caddis larva emerging and developing into a caddis pupa. This is the most vulnerable stage of the caddis and big trout know that! The Nitro Caddis Pupa can be tied in Olive and Orange variations, with the Olive being the most popular color. It is also best tied in #12 to #16 and makes a great lead fly on a nymph rig. This fly really “pops” and is fun to tie!
The Beadhead Prince Nymph is an all time favorite fly!! It seems to catch trout everywhere. In this video, James from InTheRifle ties a weighted beadhead version of the classic Prince Nymph. This version makes a great lead fly and the added weight really helps the fly get down in fast water. I prefer to tie my Prince Nymphs with red thread, but black thread also works. James also ties this Prince with Brown Hackle, but Partridge is another one of his favorite materials to use on this fly. Both work just fine. A MUST have fly in any fly box. Both professionals and beginners swear by the Prince. When you don’t know what to use in trout country….just tie on a Prince!!

Often times during the holidays we lose sight of what it’s all really about: a time to be thankful for all that we have, and a time to give. We are extremely thankful for the business that we have been blessed with. This year is our 11th anniversary, and we have a larger team as well as many new brands and the privilege to serve many new and returning customers. We are so appreciative of our customers, vendors, and manufacturers we do business with. So, with a grateful spirit in this season of giving, we want to do a contest where you get a chance to give something. We did this GIVEaway last year and were so impressed by the thoughtfulness of everyone’s submissions that we decided to do it again.
The Pink Pookie is a hopper pattern developed by Dean Reiner in Montana. The Pink Pookie imitates a grasshopper and the fish go crazy for it! The Pink body is much different than many other hopper patterns out there, but don’t be fooled by the bright appearance, this pattern really works!! It is usually tied in sizes #06 and #08, but larger and smaller versions can be tied. The best color is…of course…Pink. But many other anglers tie them in Tan, Yellow and Olive. A great terrestrial pattern to have in your summer Montana Hopper box!! Happy fly tying!
