The Bubble Back Midge
Effective midge pattern especially on Colorado Rivers. Tied in sizes 18-24. Good replacement for when the classic zebra isn’t getting as many takers as you would like. Fish it like you would any other midge pupae. Get it down and be ready for the subtle midge eats. Mix and match colors to get what you want. White with a pearl krystal flash rib can make a mean mysis imitation.
This month for Fly Tying Month we are tying TWICE a week! Join us every Friday during March to join in on the fun of an extra fly tying tutorial! Check out our Bench Guide to learn more about our 3rd Fly Tying Month. Continue reading “How To Tie The Bubble Back Midge: Fly Tying Video”
The Micro Foam Ant (Rainy’s Foam Ant Bodies)
Simple and effective, Rainy’s Ant Bodies have made things easy. Put a hook in the vise, add the foam, some hackle, and a wing and you’re done. I love tying this fly and maybe enjoy fishing it even more. The white web wing helps you see it and the hackle gives this dry fly the perfect amount of movement on the water. Try Black and Brown to match the ants on your local water.

The Game Changer
The most realistic fish pattern out there. The Fish-Skull articulated spine gives the fly a super realistic swim in the water. This fly can be tied or colored to represent any fish in the water.

The Sparkle Emerger (McFlylon Variation)
Originally created by Gary LaFontaine, master of the caddis lifecycle, this pattern varies only slightly. Using McFlylon in place of the Antron (Sparkle Emerger) yarn the rest of this pattern remains. I find that this material is a little easier to work with as you don’t have to card your fibers together and can clip right from the hank. If you are fishing a caddis hatch and the fish don’t seem to be slamming the top water they might be gorging on the emergence. Try this guy and it will undoubtedly put fish in the net.

Pav’s Shimmer Swimmer
Think of this fly as an improved Sparkle Minnow. Bright day, bright streamer, as the saying goes. This silvery and white baby fish imitation is sure to entice a lunker. Pounding the banks from a boat is my favorite way to fish it, however fishing it on stillwater is very effective as well. When stocked rainbows get dropped in the lake they become part of the menu for those bigger predatory fish. Swim this fly like a wounded bait fish and don’t miss the aggressive take. Another great fly from Umpqua Feather Merchants signature tier Greg Garcia. Today we tie a variation of the Darth Baetis. Click here to see the original version of the Darth Baetis.
I love this fly! Using a UV finish to help create a translucent abdomen for an excellent looking fly. Possibly most popularly tied in the brown variation this fly works great in olive, grey and the black variation shown here. This is a great fly to fish year round and will consistently turn fish. Get it down and get hooked up!
