How To Tie: The Bareback Stonefly

In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Brady ties the Bareback Stonefly!

The Rubber Leg Stonefly is a well-loved pattern known for being quick, simple, and highly effective. But sometimes, you need a more refined version, whether for your own confidence or to entice finicky fish. Enter the Bareback, created by Bob Streb of Umpqua Feather Merchants. This fly is a slight upgrade, featuring a simple latex backing and a curved hook that makes a big difference. Despite these enhancements, the Bareback remains as fishable as ever, and in some situations, it even performs better. The wide hook gape of the scud-style hook boosts confidence, while the variety of variegated chenille available today allows for countless size and color combinations. If you’re using it as a lead fly, adding weight makes it an excellent attractor. The Bareback is best fished in a multi-nymph rig, either under an indicator or with tightline nymphing techniques.

  1. Excellent presentation. I like how the materials are identified in the video. Great job. I have been tying flies for many years and have been learning more techniques from the AVIDMAX videos. Never to old to learn new tricks.
