How to tie The Gartside Sparrow
The Sparrow is a classic pattern designed by Jack Gartside on the Madison River just outside of Yellowstone. Jack didn’t want to have to change his fly any more than was necessary and wanted a pattern that could be fished like a nymph, streamer, or even as a hopper imitation. Traditionally this fly is tied with only natural materials and a Phestant Rump as the main ingredient, but you can substitute it for Brahma Hen, India Hen, or your favorite for soft hackle cape. The sparrow looks like a lot of things in general and nothing in particular – Give it a try.
