The Vis-A-Dun
John Barr’s Vis-A-Dun is a simple update to the Comparadun/Sparkledun fly patterns to help make it ride a little higher on the water’s surface film and also a little more visible to the fisher. Substituting the fine deer hair wing for a synthetic yarn (Sparkle Emerger Yarn) allows for a wide range of colors to be used, ensuring you will be able to see your fly in a multitude of light conditions.
Add the hackle that is trimmed underneath to help keep it afloat while maintaining a lower profile. Similar to a Comparadun or Sparkledun, this fly is great fished in smaller sizes during prominent mayfly hatches. Using a small indicator like the Mill Stream Foam Strike Indicators will help you track your drift in difficult light conditions.
