Fair Flies – Quality Fly Tying Materials Made To Give New Hope

In October 2017 we traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal and trained more than 40 people, primarily women, to make our 5D Brushes. Many of these individuals are at risk of exploitation. In Nepal, exploitation usually involves trafficking, which has several forms, with the most pervasive being sex trafficking (mostly female minors) and labor trafficking (mostly young men). One of the largest problems in Nepal is lack of employment. Sadly, this forces young women into dire situations, both in country and abroad. The number of women and children trafficked out of Nepal is estimated at 30,000 a year, or more than 80 people a day. Lack of employment also forces young men to seek work outside the country. It is estimated that 1,600 Nepali men leave their home every day, seeking work outside the country. This often turns into bonded labor in perilous working condition. How To Tie The Balanced Ghost (Balanced Leech): Fly Tying Video

The Balanced Ghost (Balanced Leech)

The balanced leech is fished best under an indicator in stillwaters when there is some wind causing top water disturbance to give constant action and movement to your fly. 10-20 feet of water seems ideal over weed beds. Tied in many colors, this fly is great for imitating a leech or a minnow. Try tying one today!

This month for Fly Tying Month we are tying TWICE a week along with all our other sales and giveaways! Join us every Friday during March to join in on the fun of an extra fly tying tutorial! Check out our Bench Guide to learn all the details.

How To Tie: The Nitro Caddis Pupae

The Nitro Caddis Pupa

Created by Andrij Hordysky, the Nitro caddis pupa is an awesome realistic imitation of just that, a pupating caddis. For a lot of caddis flies, it takes a good while for this stage. If they are a free formed caddis fly they have to create their entire casing vs. simply closing the existing casing a case caddis features. This means they could be working on this for weeks or even months. Considering that, I tend to tie this fly on pretty often. It is a perfect dropper fly under a hefty stimulator or foam dry fly.

How To Tie The Chart Baetis: Fly Tying Video

The Chart Baetis

A great baetis pattern to fish deep or in discolored or high/off colored water. A tungsten bead helps get rig down quick in turbulent water. I will also tie with couple other color matte beads. I like the fluorescent orange and the caddis green bead. Also try tying this fly from 16-22 hook sizes. An easy tie and very effective. Designed by Max Pavel.

Discovery & Recovery: My Fly Tying Story

I had a bad parachute jump while in the military. Long story short – I hurt my knees. Fast forward to September of last year – I’m playing in the yard with my son and BAM! The doctor said I had complete tears in both quadricep tendons and would require surgery to walk again. Turns out it was the recovery process was the worst part! They sent me to a nursing home with my legs immobilized and restricted me to a bed, 24 hours a day for 6 weeks. Learn More “Discovery & Recovery: My Fly Tying Story”

How To Tie The Bubble Back Midge: Fly Tying Video

The Bubble Back Midge

Effective midge pattern especially on Colorado Rivers. Tied in sizes 18-24. Good replacement for when the classic zebra isn’t getting as many takers as you would like. Fish it like you would any other midge pupae. Get it down and be ready for the subtle midge eats. Mix and match colors to get what you want. White with a pearl krystal flash rib can make a mean mysis imitation.

How To Tie: The Zebra Midge Fly

Upon first glance, especially to a new fly angler or tyer the Zebra Midge may appear to be an insignificant fly. Indeed, its simplistic appearance can be quite deceiving, until you consider the role chironomidae play in every habitable freshwater environment world-wide. Although small in size, the chironomid larva which the Zebra Midge imitates, play a major role in the diet of trout throughout the year. At times they occur with such abundance that not having them in your fly box may mean the difference between a fruitful outing or just getting your line wet.

How To Tie: The Micro Foam Ant (Rainy’s Foam Ant Bodies)

The Micro Foam Ant (Rainy’s Foam Ant Bodies)

Simple and effective, Rainy’s Ant Bodies have made things easy. Put a hook in the vise, add the foam, some hackle, and a wing and you’re done. I love tying this fly and maybe enjoy fishing it even more. The white web wing helps you see it and the hackle gives this dry fly the perfect amount of movement on the water. Try Black and Brown to match the ants on your local water.

5 Tips To A Cleaner Fly Tying Bench

A clean fly tying area is super important when you’re trying to crank out bugs. For me, it can be tough to just tie one type of fly when I sit down at the vise for a couple of hours. Things get wild and crazy and it looks like I murdered the whole animal kingdom on my desk. I flick the light off and leave it for later… When I sit down at my bench the next time I feel unmotivated and out of sorts. Keeping a clean tying area means better tying.

Here 5 quick things you can do to keep a cleaner bench.
