Welcome back to Tying Tuesday! This week, we’re in the studio with Kyle—the man, the myth, the bearded legend himself! Can you believe it’s Christmas Eve already? This year has absolutely flown by, leaving us all in shock. Meanwhile, Kyle is as snug as a bug in the studio, focused on crafting streamers like the pro he is.
Now, he may have refused to rock the Santa suit or even an elf hat (despite the festive vibes), but that doesn’t stop him from absolutely crushing this week’s streamer. Kyle is bringing us a nifty little pattern he stumbled upon online: the Sucker’s Prayer. This slim beauty might not be the heaviest streamer out there, but it more than makes up for it with pure, undeniable style. Let’s dive in!
💥 Tie it. Fish it. Love it. #TyingTuesday
Winter Tips and Tricks for Fly Fishing with Streamers
Winter fly fishing with streamers can be incredibly rewarding if approached strategically. Here are some tips and tricks to help you succeed:
1. Choose the Right Streamers
- Go Smaller and Subtle: Fish are less aggressive in winter. Opt for smaller streamers (size 8–12) that mimic baitfish or aquatic insects.
- Natural Colors: Use muted, natural tones like olive, black, and brown, which resemble winter forage.
- Weighted Patterns: Streamers with built-in weight (coneheads or beadheads) can help you reach the strike zone quickly.
2. Adjust Your Presentation
- Slow and Steady: Fish are lethargic in cold water. Use slow, deliberate retrieves with occasional pauses to mimic sluggish prey.
- Dead Drift Technique: Allow your streamer to drift naturally, especially in deep pools and seams.
- Swing the Streamer: Cast across and downstream, letting your streamer swing through the current. This is effective in tailwaters.
3. Focus on Prime Holding Spots
- Deep Pools: Trout congregate in slower, deeper water to conserve energy.
- Eddies and Seams: Look for areas where slow and fast currents meet.
- Undercuts and Structure: Winter fish often hide under rocks, logs, and other cover.
4. Use the Right Gear
- Sink-Tip Lines: A sink-tip line helps get your streamer to the bottom faster, where fish are holding.
- Fluorocarbon Leaders: Fluorocarbon sinks and is less visible in clear winter water. Use 3X–5X tippet for strength and stealth.
- Shorter Leaders: A 6–9 foot leader allows better control when fishing deep and with weighted flies.
5. Timing Matters
- Midday Fishing: The best time to fish is often between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun has warmed the water slightly.
- Warmer Days: Target sunny or overcast days when water temperatures rise a degree or two.
6. Stay Warm and Safe
- Layer Up: Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers.
- Wading Safety: Winter rocks are slippery, and cold water is dangerous. Use a wading staff and studs for stability.
- Protect Your Hands: Invest in fingerless gloves or hand warmers to maintain dexterity.
7. Experiment with Retrieves
- Erratic Strips: Occasionally vary your retrieve to trigger instinctive strikes.
- Jigging Motion: Lift and drop your rod tip gently to make your streamer dart up and down.
8. Observe and Adapt
- Match the Hatch: Even with streamers, observe the local baitfish or insect activity to choose the right size and color.
- Monitor Water Temperatures: Trout feed actively in slightly warmer water, so focus on areas warmed by sun or springs.
9. Use a Two-Fly Setup
- Streamer and Nymph Combo: Pair a small streamer with a trailing nymph for added versatility.
- Attractor Streamer: Use a bright streamer to draw attention and a subtle fly for picky fish.
10. Stay Patient
Winter fishing requires persistence. Fish may strike less often, but the rewards are worth the effort. Use these tips to refine your technique and enjoy a peaceful winter day on the water.

Please tell me is the Suckers Prayer a small sucker that our pike would like or it’s to “sucker” in that deep lazy brown?
Well Mike, I think both could be right…I will get with Kyle and see if he knows the original tyer, and maybe we can get an answer! Happy Holidays
