WD-50
The WD-50 is an upgraded version of the classic WD-40, though the original hardly needed any improvement. This pattern adds a touch of flash and a wing on top, giving it more of an emerger-like appearance. Typically tied on the TMC 2487, I’ve opted for the TMC 2457 instead—a 2x heavy wire hook—for added durability and a bit more weight in this otherwise unweighted fly.
Originally created by Mark Engler in Colorado, the WD-40 has been a staple in every angler’s fly box. The WD-50, designed by Carl Stouts, deserves a spot right beside it. The “WD” refers to the wood duck feathers used for the tail and wing case, though mallard flank can be substituted as well. My most productive colors are grey, olive, and black, but don’t hesitate to experiment with red and purple for something different. The WD-50 is a deadly little fly, perfect for trailing behind a dry or fishing subsurface in your nymph rig.
