How To Tie: ABC Leech

Welcome to Fly Tying Tuesday

Designed to imitate the swimming motion and profile of a natural leech — a favorite meal for trout in stillwater and slow-moving rivers

Welcome back to Fly Tying Tuesday! This week, Kyle’s tying something special — the ABC Leech, featuring the brand-new Semperfli ABC Materials. This innovative material is redefining durability and lifelike movement in fly design. The Blood Red 25mm Leech Body not only looks incredible in the water but is also built to withstand fish after fish without fraying or tearing.

If you’re ready to tie a fly that’s both deadly effective and nearly indestructible, this is the one to try — especially when targeting leech-eating trout in stillwater or slow-moving rivers.

Let’s Tie, see Kyle in action in the video!

Materials Used: (all available at AvidMax)

Step-by-Step Tying Instructions:

Thread Base
Start your thread with Semperfli Nano Silk just behind the bead, building a smooth base toward the hook bend.

Underbody
Form the underbody using a sparse amount of Wapsi SLF Kaufmann Dubbing to add subtle color and texture beneath the leech body.

Leech Body
Tie in the Semperfli ABC Leech Body at the bend, wrapping it forward with overlapping turns to create a slim, natural profile.

Collar
Add movement by dubbing a collar of MFC Arizona Simi Seal Mega Dub right behind the bead — this adds bulk and shimmer.

Wing/Top
Top it off with a soft plume of Wapsi CDC in Ginger for realistic movement in the water.

Finish
Whip finish and cement the head for durability — this fly is built to last with Semperfli’s super-strong materials.

How to Fish It

  • The ABC Leech shines in stillwater or slow-moving rivers.
  • Fish it on a floating or intermediate line with a slow hand-twist or short strip retrieve to imitate a swimming leech.
  • The red Semperfli body adds a subtle trigger color, while the CDC and dubbing blend bring it to life underwater.
