RIO InTouch Single Hand Spey Fly Fishing Line review

I’ve been able to use my new Rio Single Handed Spey (SHS) line a few times now, and find it to be a great addition to my gear. My default line of choice is a conventional WF6F but there are situations it isn’t optimal, and these are where the SHS excels.

1. Limited room for back cast—the SHS is weighted in a way that make roll and spey casting a breeze. I’m able to fish in spots that were a real problem with the conventional line.

2. Windy conditions—just a couple of days ago I found myself in gusty wind and was wrapping my conventional line around myself too often. I put on the SHS and was able to overhead cast or spey cast without problem, and get it out to where I needed it to be quite easily.

3. Quick, repeated casts with soft hackle—I love fishing soft hackles, casting into riffles and letting them swing through the seam. SHS is perfect for this. At the end of the swing I can usually just flip my flies right back into the riffle.

There’s one more thing I like and was not expecting: it works well presenting dry flies, as long as the leader and tippet are the right length.

This line isn’t cheap, but the value is there. In combination with my conventional line I’m much better prepared to maximize my time on the river and catch more fish.
